Summary

I think I’m going batty…
Literally…

I told myself I’d never go back。

I’m returning to the Vilokan Asylum of the Magically and Mentally Deranged…

Not to get treated… but perhaps Doctor Cain can help。

The world’s original werewolf… and its first murderer。

If anyone can help me get a handle on an undesirable shape-shifting situation… it’s him。

But there is a coven of bat-shifting vampires with other plans。

Surely their appearance and my… acquisition of this ability… isn’t a coincidence。

If I’ve learned anything hunting vampires, it’s that I can guarantee that they’re up to no good。

And I can’t help but wonder… am I the one hunting them?

Or have the tables turned?

Love the world building for this series。 It continued to be clear and interesting pulling me into the story。 The character was even more lively and interesting in this book。 Absolutely love this character。 She brings drama and humor to the book。 The storyline was interesting and had me from the start。 I can’t wait to see where this character and story goes from here in the future。 Love the series。 I received this as an ARC and this is my honest review。

I received a copy of this book from the author but this review is all my own! This second book in this series was another great one。 I love the characters of Nicky and Devin and how they are portrayed。 Nicky is a water elemental, who used to be able to change human form to become whoever her prey most desired, but now she is stuck in human form, in the form of a male, but she identifies herself as a female。 She has a couple of other personas - Nyx, the vampire hunter and a singing drag queen。 Al I received a copy of this book from the author but this review is all my own! This second book in this series was another great one。 I love the characters of Nicky and Devin and how they are portrayed。 Nicky is a water elemental, who used to be able to change human form to become whoever her prey most desired, but now she is stuck in human form, in the form of a male, but she identifies herself as a female。 She has a couple of other personas - Nyx, the vampire hunter and a singing drag queen。 Although she has a boyfriend, Devin, she's not yet fully prepared to give herself totally to the relationship, not because of past hurts, but because of how she used to feel when she would eat her human prey。 Luckily for her, Devin is prepared to wait。。。for now。。。until she is ready。 When a female vampire appears in Nicky's club during her act, the vampire triggers a new change in Nicky, one she (and I) was definitely not expecting。 At the same time, Devin's overly religious mother is attacked by vampires, leaving him with the difficult decision of whether to save her by turning her into a vampire herself or letting her die。 With these two situations, Nicky only knows one place to turn to。。。a place she never really wanted to go back to, but the only place where she can get the help she and Devin's mum both need - the Vilokan Asylum, where we first met Nyx many books ago! There she is hoping that Cain can help her to get the answers she needs, but there's more than just answers awaiting her there。。。。I loved this story line and how some of the previous characters made their reappearances as well - Cain is a favourite character of mine and I cannot wait to read his series, which is coming out soon too! I liked seeing Annabelle and Hailey again too and Pauli, oh how I love Pauli! He needs his own series or novella too! Lots of fun, some heart-wrenching moments and a heap of action too! A great read and I can't wait for the next one in this series too! 。。。more

A thoroughly great book as only Theophilus Monroe delivers。 I loved the characters and seeing where the story went with this second book in the series。 Truly delicious!

So, book two in the series and what a series it is。 Yet another that seems to get better with every book。 Nicky certainly has her work cut out that for sure。 Highly recommended。

I picked this book more or less at random; I’d been reading too many non-fiction books lately and I needed something trashy and fun。 This looked like that。 I should have looked harder; it was the second book in the series。 It hardly mattered, Theophilus did a good job with the character recaps in the first few chapters。 I usually watch tv shows from the second or third ep anyway。 All in all, it exceeded expectations in every way。 It seemed a bit queer from a passing glance, and I was delighted to I picked this book more or less at random; I’d been reading too many non-fiction books lately and I needed something trashy and fun。 This looked like that。 I should have looked harder; it was the second book in the series。 It hardly mattered, Theophilus did a good job with the character recaps in the first few chapters。 I usually watch tv shows from the second or third ep anyway。 All in all, it exceeded expectations in every way。 It seemed a bit queer from a passing glance, and I was delighted to find it was extremely rainbow hued, eschewing ‘representation’ for making the whole damn cast some variety of queer。 The main character, Nyx/Nyxie, is a trans (in every way) woman, trapped in the body of a man via literal transformation。 Even her name transforms。 Really, I have yet to meet the perfect token gay, who inexplicably surrounds themselves with squares for the purpose of story representation。 I suspect they don’t exist… so this is fine。 I’m not sure if the author is LGBTQ, and I’m not trans myself。 It didn’t seem like a poor portrayal, in basically any way。 But I would love to hear a more informed opinion。 If the author is straight, this book is miraculous, straight people are usually atrocious at writing queer characters。 The metaphor is extended with various other transforming creatures of the night, and that also worked surprisingly well。 I never thought group therapy could be so amusing。 As for the side characters, Cain is a particular favorite, though I may just have an affinity for the beastly professor archetype。 Or, perhaps I just have a fondness for the figure the archetype is pointing to。 It’s hard to say, at this point。 It’s nice to see the author also has a fondness for the character; I may have to read his own series。 There are a few typos in the digital edition I read。 But most of these typos are the sort that our magical "spell of check" inevitably misses。 I’m an author too, and I know the struggle; good editors are hard to find and too expensive when you find them。 But, Theophilus, if you 'want' a magic 'wand' to point out the 'rot' in what you have 'wrought', don't be a 'harrier,' and before things get 'hairier' you have this magic spell and find/replace。 You're welcome。 I deduct no stars for this。 Really, the fault here is more in the stars than in the text。 If this was a ten star system this would get an easy 9。 Sure, it’s not literature, but I really enjoyed it。 Most of the jokes landed and the characters were amusing, if a bit ‘hanging on tropes for the sake of expediency’。 All very nice。 。。。more

The second instalment into “The Legend of Nyx” is “Bat Shift Crazy” with and without the *f*。 Nyx, the protagonist of the series, is a water elemental and human predator, who lure its intended victims using shapeshifting abilities to attract and consume them。 But even nature most consummated killer can make mistakes and chose the wrong target, one who stole her powers and letting trapped into the male body used to allure her。 Nyx has been forced to live and interact with humans, as a human trapp The second instalment into “The Legend of Nyx” is “Bat Shift Crazy” with and without the *f*。 Nyx, the protagonist of the series, is a water elemental and human predator, who lure its intended victims using shapeshifting abilities to attract and consume them。 But even nature most consummated killer can make mistakes and chose the wrong target, one who stole her powers and letting trapped into the male body used to allure her。 Nyx has been forced to live and interact with humans, as a human trapped in the wrong body, as Nyx is female at core。 Nyx journey forces her to interact, even sympathize with her former victims, while experiencing and dodging all kind of prejudices and discrimination in the process。 The only way to revert to her own self is by finding the vampire who took her abilities away and forced her to bestow her power back。 There is a catch though…。to find the whereabouts of such vampire Nyx has to confer with Doctor Cain, yes, that Cain, the first murderer and original werewolf and what is even worse, the mad psychiatrist running the Asylum。 Nyx will be on the prowl looking for the ‘thief’ amongst a bat-shifting vampire coven, lest the hunter become the hunted…。。 already told you… this is Bat。Shift。Crazy 😉When it comes to Monroe, I have learnt to expect the unexpected, regardless with every new book I cannot help to wonder at his ingenuity and the permanent ‘creative fugue’ that seems to permeate every and each one of his characters。 However, Nyx takes the whole the whole verse to a brand-new level, she is the embodiment of queerness, through and through, not a token queer to please the masses, but a fully fleshed character that brings us into a journey to find/regain her true identity while let us taken part in an amazing urban fantasy adventure。 Monroe uses his highly original style to criticize societal norms without ever for a nanosecond forget his very first intention: to entertain the reader to the fullest。The story moves effortless while Nyx takes the reader forward into her quest to find the vampire that stole her shifter ability and finally regain her identity, while plots and subplots flow into each other to form a rich tapestry of unexpected twists and turns, until Nyx visit to the Asylum slowly but steady turns into a journey of introspection to exorcise the past。“The Legend of Nyx” is the latest addiction to the “Gates of Eden”, an fully original verse that loosely borrows Arthurian tropes and transfer them organically into a modern urban fantasy that spans centuries, crossing realms and blurs the boundaries between reality and legend and transforms them into a veritable smørrebrød of action, unexpected twists, wonderful characters and mind-blowing descriptions, garnished with a good dose of magic some sprinkles of mythical lore and some paranormal romance on the side, and served with very well-crafted, with an accurate world building, interesting characters, captivating writing style and carefully editing。 Monroe’s ‘Garten of Eden’ verse is populated by a vast number of extraordinary characters, which are (unless very subjectively) almost impossible to rank, but even among the best of the best, Nyx is even more remarkable than the rest 😉 。。。more

Her boyfriend's mother is turned, which prompts them to get help from Cain。 Things unravel quickly and soon they are all in danger。 Loved that familiar characters are back, especially Pauli, who's a riot! Even Julie and Hailey are part of the story, which flows so well and are actually intricately vital to the plot。 Great storyline, great plot, terrific characters and great overall!
